Before first use (sealing)

Before using the piece for the first time, soak it fully in hot (or cold) water and let it absorb the water. This is called "medome" (sealing), and it helps prevent tea stains and other marks.

Pottery is made from clay, so it absorbs a small amount of water. Letting it take in water first, rather than using it dry, helps it stay clean for longer.

About dishwashers

You may use a dishwasher, but we recommend washing by hand.

In a dishwasher, pieces can knock against each other, which may chip the rims or cause scratches. Please wash with a soft sponge and wipe off any water after washing.

Oven, open flame and toaster oven

Not suitable.

These pieces are not made from heat-resistant clay, so sudden changes in temperature may cause them to crack. Please cook in heat-resistant cookware and use this piece for serving.

Daily care

Leaving the piece wet for a long time may cause mold or deterioration. Please dry it well after washing.

Leaving strong-smelling foods, or deeply colored foods or liquids, in the piece for a long time may cause odors or colors to transfer.

Crazing (kannyu) and how the piece matures

Pottery is made from clay, so it absorbs a small amount of moisture. The surface of the glaze also has fine lines called "kannyu" (crazing). They do not lead to breakage.

Moisture and color slowly enter through these lines, and the color deepens the more the piece is used. In Japan, this change has long been appreciated as the "keshiki" (landscape) of a vessel.

If you would like the change to be more gradual, we recommend sealing the piece before first use, and washing and drying it soon after each use.

Individual differences

Each piece is handmade by our craftspeople. Shades of color, glaze runs and pools, small pinholes, slight warping: no two pieces are exactly alike. Listed sizes are approximate.

Our inspection standards, which show what we ship as good-quality items, are published on our "Inspection Standards" page (in Japanese). If you would like to see the actual piece before purchasing, please contact us and we will send you photos of it.

Repairs

We also offer kintsugi repair for broken pieces, joining them with lacquer (an urushi substitute). Before letting a piece go, please talk to us first.

What is Sayado Wadagama?

About Sayado Wadagama

Sayado Wadagama is written as ``Sayado Wadagama.''

SAYADO is a place name in Mashiko Town. This area, which has long produced clay for pottery, is the center of Mashiko ware production, as it produces clay, the raw material for Mashiko ware, and is home to many Mashiko ware kilns.

Sayado Wadagama is a brand that aims to produce pottery, which can be said to be a product of nature, with a ``responsibility of receiving from nature'' and to deliver the charm of pottery to as many people as possible.

Through the tools of pottery, we provide true abundance and help people and the earth coexist.
Aiming for such a future, we continue to face the soil today.
